José Cruz Coldivar (El “7”)
The masks are his specialty, the faces of women
- his inspiration.
Early start.
In the outskirts of the Reyna Mountain in Tonala - Town the sun rises are unequal where the name Tonala meaning the "Place where the sun comes out" so after early breakfast Jose Cruz is out for an early start with no signs at this workshop, the famous artist finds himself walking between shelves of his work, some finished, some ready to paint. While he is painting a sun that will be picked up at noon, he remember with love the Work of his father, how he could paint passages of Europe, even throw he had never been out of his own.
He carries all those memories of his childhood, especially when he works with clay. Since an early age he was very restless, but not to go play like the rest of the kids, he wanted to be the best crafter in town. At school he was the one uncharged of painting the murals, his ability for drawing and Painting took him to the workshop of Sergio Bustamante.
He never attended painting school, but he contact with the rest of the artisans made him learn different techniques they also thought him to be a professional at his work, even if you earn a little, he keeps that Philosophy to these days.
A revolutionary His eagerness to be different, caused him some trouble when he worked in other workshops painted: traditional, horses, hens, cockfights, but the owners didn't want that, and I wouldn't listen, I knew they would sell anyways...I have broken rules and I have the satisfaction, that I left a (finger print) everywhere.
After finishing University as Industrial Chemistry, 1 didn't for too long. As I was always drawing in every piece of paper, until one classmate told me you should go back painting your- vases, and I realized that's where I belonged, so I went back to work at my brother's workshop, and using the broken vases, I started painted them my own style, I bought colors, and started working on my own pieces and It was a good year, but young and inexperienced, he was victim of a foreigner who stole his production, he was left bankrupt So he went back to work for Sergio Bustamante but now as a designer. My job was to look at the piece, and then I would decide what to paint on it.
To keep his work updated he travel to different states of Mexico to learn more about different techniques and he opened his own workshop.
He molds and paints, masks, eggs with animal
s, he dedicates his heart and soul, to each and every of the pieces he paints.
His future is full of work and he states, whatever I design, I will never stop
painting, because here is where I (relief my self), I feel alive and then let
my mind fly free.
