The Art of Tablas Votivas – Huichol Indians
About the Artist
Juan Silva was bom in Tepic, Nayarit north of Guadalajara Mexico. He leamed
the art of Tablas Votivas from his mother's people the Huichol Indians. His
abilities to depict the traditional tribal themes were soon recognized. In 1976
he moved to Baja California where his traditional works soon came in to demand.
Juan Silva studied under Spanish artist Marcos Robinson who taught him how to
put motion in to his art. The enhancement of the ancient art form of the Huichol
Indian portraying new objects has caught the eyes of many art admirers.
The art of Juan Silva is presented in the medium of his mother's
people. The Huichol Indians live in the mountains north of Guadalajara. They
pride themselves as being the only tribe not conquered by the Conquistadores.
Family historical events and religious offerings were preserved in pictures
crafted in this medium. Juan Silva works present visual pleasures of satisfying
colors and designs
